Heritage Destination

Project period: 2005-2012

The process of developing Tranquebar as a heritage destination is initiated through the preservation of architectural heritage perspective. The town is perceived as unique because of the cultural mix between Danish and Tamil architecture.

In close cooperation with local partners, the Bestseller Fund made a master plan for developing Tranquebar into a heritage site. That involved restoration of many of its historic buildings - private as well as public. Together with local partners, the Bestseller Fund has been supporting the idea of protecting the heritage as a means of bringing change and prosperity to Tranquebar and making the town a premium heritage destination.

The last few years, the plan has been to improve the basic infrastructure like roads, water and electricity supply, and sewage system. Amenities such as drinking water, rest spaces, refreshment stands and toilet facilities have also been provided.
