Indian cotton textiles have earned their place in the world market. Recently organic cotton production and organic fabric manufacturing has received a great amount of attention as an ecologically friendly alternative to cotton cultivation and processing.
BESTSELLER FUND is doing a 3 year ecological project with Upasana Design Studio and Covenant Centre for Development (CCD). The project aims at producing a fully organic fabric. The project will start out in the villages of T. Arasapatti in Thirumangalam Taluk of the Madurai district in Tamil Nadu in India.
From organic cotton to organic fabric
In most of the organic cotton projects, the production is certified organic but the organic custody stops after growing of the cotton and then the fabric is no longer organic. This project aims to break this seemingly impenetrable wall wherein efforts will also be made to maintain the organic condition right till the final product is delivered. Therefore production will be organic and the ginning, spinning, dyeing, weaving process will be organic and therefore the final product will be completely organic.
Uplift of farmers and the weaving community
This project focuses on the production of organic cotton and at the same time on organizing a federation of farmers exclusively involved in organic cotton production. This will boost the agricultural profession. The producers of organic cotton will also benefit along with the consumers of organic cotton and here in this case, the weaving community.
